Rock crystal mine

Rock crystal was quarried here during the 1940s until 1947. The beautiful quartz crystals are in a pegmatite vein up to 10 metres thick and 100 metres long. The crystals are easiest to find in the explosion debris below the mine itself. However, a large proportion of the rock crystals are unfortunately discoloured because of careless blasting. Many crystals have a coating of ferric hydroxide which can be washed off with hydrochloric acid. It is permitted to take a few small rock crystals from the debris heaps as souvenirs, but absolutely prohibited to quarry crystals out from the rockface.
