Virisen

The farm Virisen is a mountain farm which has existed for six generations. The company Virisen Lapland runs the farm according to old traditions of hunting, fishing, agriculture and tourism. The farm has high natural cultural values. In therestaurant you can enjoy an exclusive dinner with local ingredients in its proper environment. Today this is a modern mountain farm with 25 ewes which graze about 20 hectares of land around the farm and produce meat and skin. The farm also has chickens, calves, rabbits and hunting dogs of the breed English setter.

The lake is 20 km long and has also given its name to the village. The village was in roadless country until the road reached there in 1990-91. Virisen’s earliest inhabitant, Noak Abrahamsson, was a settler and medicine man to the mountain folk. He came to Virisen in the 1830s, fascinated by the vast riches of the countryside - the cloudberries in the swamplands, the lake fish, the abundance of wildlife. All this made it possible to dwell and survive up in the north.
